Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. promised his return to boxing would be worth the 21-month wait, and only those loyal followers of Juan Manuel Marquez came away disappointed Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

In a not-so-surprising mismatch that proved Mayweather's obvious size and speed advantage would be too much to overcome, "Money" scored a unanimous decision over the lighter and shorter Marquez that actually invites more questions than it answers.

What's next for Mayweather, now that he totally dominated the undersized opponent he specifically chose for his triumphant return to boxing after nearly two years? After years of ducking larger opponents, it seems Mayweather may be at a loss to find someone who will take him on at welterweight after this fight.

Mayweather Victorious in Return
In his comeback from a short retirement, Floyd Mayweather Jr., left, overpowered the smaller, lighter Juan Manuel Marquez for a unanimous decision victory. The undefeated Mayweather was taunted and challenged after his win by WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley.

When the final bell sounded following 12 rounds of total domination by the six-time world champion in five weight divisions, Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) already had danced around the ring in triumph. He had landed more jabs in each of the 12 rounds than Marquez (50-5-1, 37 KOs) did in total punches.

Marquez's longtime trainer, Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, told his fighter before the 12th round, "Finish with dignity."

Marquez, 36, did just that. But Mayweather, 32, dominated in the final PunchStat numbers, overpowering Marquez 290-69 in total punches landed, and 105-48 in power punches that connected.

FanHouse scored the fight 120-107 for Mayweather.

Judge William Lerch scored it 118-109; Bert Clements scored it 120-107 and Dave Moretti had it 119-108 for the undefeated Mayweather.

With little to celebrate after a bout that many in boxing criticized as an unimpressive matchup to mark his return to the ring after his self-imposed hiatus, Mayweather even found himself being taunted and challenged by longtime nemesis Shane Mosley.

"We just want to get it on!" Mosley said in the middle of the ring, while Mayweather engaged in a contentious exchange with HBO pay-per-view analyst Max Kellerman.

"Shane is desperate and it was very disrespectful for him to get into the ring," Mayweather complained. "All I ask for is respect. It was my fight and my moment. He's desperate."

Mayweather came into this fight weighing 146 pounds -- two pounds more than the contractually agreed catchweight of 144 pounds. That cost him $300,000 a pound. Marquez, who has never fought heavier than 135 pounds, used all his might to tip the scale Friday at 142 pounds.

And given "Money" Mayweather's well-publicized reluctance to pay his bills and creditors, Marquez may have to chase down Mayweather Promotions to get his penalty money.

HBO tried to weigh Mayweather before the fight but he declined. So how many pounds did Mayweather carry into the ring? You figure he put on at least 10 more pounds between the weigh-in and first bell, making the difference between the two fighters a minimum of 10-15 pounds.

Marquez -- whom Beristain claimed weighed 148 pre-fight on HBO's scale Saturday night -- may have even lost a pound or two.

Marquez, who was knocked down only once, in the second round, conceded the weight disparity made a difference in how he performed.

"It was a very hard fight. He surprised me with the knockdown. He hurt me in that round but not any other time," said Marquez, whom many suspect may retire from boxing after this defeat. "I don't want to make excuses but the weight was the problem. He was too fast. But when I hit him, I knew he felt my punches."

Conversely, Mayweather came across as a guy who just did some light sparring and finished a workout at his gym across town.

"I've been off for two years, so I felt like it took me a couple of rounds to really know I was back in the ring again. And I know I'll get better," Mayweather said. "Marquez is tough as nails. He's a great little man. He was really hard to fight and he kept taking some unbelievable shots.

"But I dropped him and he jumped back up. When I dropped him with that shot, which I don't think he saw, He got back up and kept fighting."

When did Mayweather finally realize that his retirement had ended?

"You know what? I was sitting there before the bell rang, and I thought about my kids. Then I was back in the ring and I thought, 'Just stay calm and box smart.' I had my jab working. I really liked my jab."

"He's a great small man. Don't forget, I came from a great small weight class, too."

Was Mayweather surprised by anything he saw from Marquez?

"There was one point in the fight where I pulled a counter-punch and he actually tried to do the same," said Mayweather, who called this a nice return to the ring.

"I needed some rounds and some work," Mayweather explained.

The reaction in the boxing world was swift, and not so complimentary toward Mayweather.

"Floyd, congratulations for beating the best lightweight in the world," Freddie Roach, trainer for current No. 1 pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquaio, in a statement released through publicist Fred Sternburg.

This fight didn't figure to feature a lot of action, pitting a defensive specialist (Mayweather) vs. a career counter-puncher (Marquez). But the obvious difference in size (Mayweather three inches taller) and weight between the two fighters was the overriding factor

The opening round showed just that, with Marquez sitting back and respecting Mayweather's speed and power. And the PunchStat numbers supported it, with Mayweather outpunching Marquez 31-18.

In the second, Mayweather began using the jab -- finally utilizing it as a weapon -- and he used it effectively to set up punches. Marquez walked into a Mayweather left hook at 1:38, knocking him to the canvas.

The jab then transformed into an effective counter-punch for Mayweather in the third round as he methodically worked Marquez away from the center of the ring.

In the fourth round, Mayweather's overpowering hand speed and strength opened a small gash over Marquez's right eye, but there was little bleeding from that wound. However, a furious fifth round, during which a ****y Mayweather began taunting his opponent, prompted Marquez to unleash a flurry of punches as the round ended, and the Mexican underdog emerged with blood streaming from his nose.

During the break, Marquez appeared to ask his corner if he was behind. Beristain told him Mayweather was indeed winning.

It became more lopsided in the sixth, when Mayweather began tagging Marquez with left jabs at will, sitting back and waiting for opportunities to connect. In the seventh, Mayweather taunted Marquez even more, inviting him to throw punches in the corner.

That set off a rash of "Si se puede!" (Yes we can) chants from the largely pro-Marquez crowd that totaled 13,116 -- short of a sellout.

Through seven rounds, however, Marquez had landed only 40 punches. He retreated to his corner after another futile eighth round, looking like a fighter who had lost all hope but not his heart.

In the ninth, Mayweather went on the attack again, this time using his powerful right hand to punish Marquez even more. But Marquez got some measure of respect in the 10th round, going toe-to-toe with the bigger opponent in the middle of the ring and scoring with a solid left hook to Mayweather's chin.

Didn't matter. When the bell sounded to end the round, Mayweather went to his corner and began dancing – proving to everyone that Marquez wasn't hurting him at all.

Then again, a welt appeared under Mayweather's right eye in the 11th round, which was more damage than he sustained in his last fight before announcing his retirement, a December 2007 bout against Ricky Hatton.

While many in boxing are hoping this outcome will eventually lead to a boxing box-office Holy Grail -- a Mayweather-Pacquaio welterweight showdown -- "Money" hasn't entertained any PacMan questions throughout fight week.

theres no doubt about mayweathers speed and skill but theres also no doubt about his ducking and dodging of real fighters, hes avoided shane mosely for a long time among others, picking marquez while well past his best fights which were with pacquiao. Wasnt really a surprise, he wanted someone that was slower that had fought pacman so he could get in there and dance around and beat the crap out of him like he did for 12 rounds, knocked him down once but didnt hurt him and went the distance so to me it was a total loss for him and then the way he acted after the fight when Max was talking to him really wasnt a surprise either but i think that was productive, he was put on the spot and maybe now he'll start taking real fights with real fighters. i actually think Floyd is a great fighter but hasnt taken on other great fighters to really put his stamp on it. Cmon floyd quit running away from good fighters everyone wants to see you challenged for a change so we can see how good you can really be

Mayweather himself felt he had to have the more advantage of coming in overweight in fight, he knows he can't beat Sugar and Pac Man. Also want to add Mayweather is not undefeated, Castillo beat him years ago in their first fight, but got a gift from the judges.

I concur. Floyd is a ducking mofo. He ducked Sugar Shane for years. Why? Sugar Shane would KICK his ass. Mr Mosely is a true professional boxer. He ducks no one. And he will FIGHT once he's in the ring.

I never saw ANYONE as good as PacMan was in that Ricky Hatton fight. He entered into a world that few occupy in the boxing world. He was slipping punches, AND throwing punches at the same time. In one motion. That is rare. Roberto Duran could do it. PacMan is at the very tippy top of his game. I salute him.

But...Sugar Shane is too fast and too big. Too bad. PacMan would beat the crap out of Floyd. Maybe if PacMan loses to Sugar Shane, Floyd will screw up enough courage to fight him. And get his dumbass BEAT up.

Mayweather, reagardless of Shane being close to 40-years-old, will never fight him. He lacks the sack. Shane beat Oscar when Oscar was in his prime. Twice. How? Speed baby. Floyd knows he is not as fast as Shane, and WILL get hit. That is unacceptable him.

Sugar Shane fought Marquez. I happen to bet that fight. Shane to win by KO. He ended up knocking out Marquez in round 12. With like 10 seconds left in the fight. It was so beautiful, I cried. Like a fookin baby. Shane beat up Marquez for 12 FULL rounds, and then knocked his ass out, just like HE bet on himself to win by KO. I am positive he did do just that.

Personally, I hate Floyd. He wears a belt, sure. But he ain't no freaking champion. Hey Floyd! The jab is a setup punch. You are supposed to throw other punches too. Why don't he? He would have to bury his chin in his opponents chest, and throw punches from close in. He'd have to smell the stink on their breath. He'd have to TAKE a good shot, to deliver a good shot. Sadly, he lacks the sack. A coward is a coward is a coward. There is no cure for cowardice. A big fat yellow steak...never changes color.

Mayweather hasn't really fought anyone that will give him a Fight ,like Pacman ????
He figured he fight Marquez cause Marquez fought with Manny pacman Pacquiao which turned out 1 for 1 .Thinking I beat Marquez ,indirectly I beat Pacman Pacquiao.
That question was going to be asked Until Sugar Shane caught his vein .
The Mayweather Family are a bunch of Bullies .They never even let anyone get a chance to ask a Question .

If you want to see a Mexican get beat up, watch the Mosley vs Marquez on youtube. Shane beats him like a rented mule, with both hands, for 12 full rounds. Then knocks him out cold.

Compare that with what Mayweather did vs Marquez. When you do that, you'll find that there is no comparison.

Shane knocked out Marquez, cold, after 12 rounds of grueling ass whipping, with the so called "Anchor" punch. Ali said that was the punch he used to knock out Liston the second time. The phantom punch. It wasn't actually. There is no name for that punch Ali threw. No need. No one but Ali could throw it. George Forman knocked out Clooney with the Anchor punch. To throw it, you have to stride towards your opponent, and the only time you can throw it is when they are in a purely defensive mode. Like after a knockdown. Only a true professional would think of throwing it. Or could throw it. Or say they threw it, when they didn't.

No one gets up from the Anchor punch. It's like they got shot. It travels only maybe six inches at most, so it is a hard punch to see, from the wrong angle.

Bunch of big mouthed bullies. So true. One day, Jr will get his due just like his daddy did when he fought Sugar Ray Leonard. Talking mad shit about someone is one thing. But that was Ray Leonard, and they don't call him Sugar for nothing.

He beat Floyd Sr mercilessly. Ray was mad! Floyd still talks a lot of shit, but after that fight...he slurs his words a little bit. Ass whippings that go on for round after round is what damages the brain the mostest. It's why they die in the ring too. It's never one monsterous blow that kills boxers. It's an ass whipping that goes on and on and on. Boxing deaths decrease significantly when they outlawed 15 round fights.

He lucky he didn't die. I thought it was funny then. It's even more so today.

PacMan...could be the one to finally shut that mofo up. I believe he has more skills than even Sugar Ray. He has the heart. He is a true champion. But he is taxing the known boxing laws already. Hatton was perfect for him cause he has zero defensive skills and is slower. Oscar was perfect because he was old, slow, and is big P u s s y who likes to dress up in drag. Mosley has a good chin. Cotto won his fight with Mosley because Shane could not hurt him. Period. He hit him with everything he had in his bag, and Cotto kept coming. That is what will happen with PacMan when he fights Mosley, I believe. Cotto never hurt Shane. He just lost the fight. I just can't see how PacMan can hurt Mosley. Not even with his best punch, which he will never land.

Personally, I'm torn. I admire them both as true professionals. Maybe...a draw :)

what i really wanna see isnt shane vs mayweather, its pacquiao vs mayweather, why? because i think pacquiao came at a time where the lighter division was covered in extremely tough and fast fighters and he had to make quite a few hurdles to get to the point that he has, i think the tough fights hes had even the 2 with marquez has put him at a level that hes proving to be hard to match, speed, skill and power and like HeyRube said probably the only ive seen dodge and give a hard punch all in the same movement, unbeleiveable, i dont think another marquez fight would turn out the same, it would over with in a mad hurry .... pacman seems to be on top of his game and even against bigger and supposed stronger opposition he sure is laying the smackdown and not just close fights but 100% one sided fights .... lets have it floyd sign the dotted line for a fight against pacquiao .... i think Pacman has earned the right to hand Mayweather his first loss on paper, i mean you want a belt you best go to the source for it

come on guys, floyd mayweather has proven to be pound for pound one of the best boxers around, yes he may have a big mouth, but he always back it up in the ring just like terrel owens in footballand mohammed ali in his glory days. As allister9 said i would really want to see pacman and mayweather in a showdown simply because it would be a bigger and better attraction, not to take away anything from sugar shane mosely but i think that mayweather is ayounger and a better boxer than mosely.

hek ya! pac man vs mayweather. However, mayweather always makes for a boring fight, and I wonder if he would make even a pac man fight seem kinda boring. The guy has elite boxing skills no doubt, but makes it boring. Thats why we love MMA, none of that boring defense crap goes on in there!

I love pac-man and would love to see him DESTROY mayweather. I think hes the only fighter out there right now that can aggressively push the pace, and still maintain speed that mayweather hasnt seen.

Mayweather wants respect, but he still does not understand respect you do not comand respect you earn and he has done nothing to earn it, you have to recognice he is an esceptional boxer with an enormous natural talent but like everybody says, he in reality has not fought any body just a few carefull picked figthers that were past their prime or to small for him, the day he fights somebody equal to him and wins then he could say I'm the number one,

I had thought that PacMan vs Mosley was an already signed fight. I guess not. PacMan is...smarter than the average bear, and so is his camp. Team PacMan is a true...team. No egos. No bullshit. Just...honing their tool...Manny the PacMan.

Mosley is setting a trap....but the PacMan camp knows it. Here is what they are saying:

It was reported that Mosley has agreed to a 60/40 split in favor of the reigning pound-for-pound champion, and on the inclusion of a rematch clause in the fight contract, in case he wins over Pacquiao.
One of Pacquiao’s advisers – Rex “Wakee” Salud – issued the warning after Mosley said he’s ready to stake his WBA welterweight crown if he gets to face the Filipino champion at a catch weight of 144 lb on Oct. 17.
Salud said it’s all too good to be true, “Manny may be too small for Mosley if he agrees to fight at 144 pounds."
“It’s Mosley who needs Manny so he should agree to what Freddie Roach (Pacquiao’s trainer) wants and that’s 142. Or at least, maybe they can make 143. But not 144,”

Too good to be true! Too true. Mosley holds the....WBA Welterweight belt. He has the right to demand a 50-50 split.

Oh shit! WTF have I been? Pacman is going to fight Cotto on Nov 14th? He passed on Mosley? Out of the fire and into the frying pan. Oh Lord! Oh fook! OMFG!

Maybe...PacMan could have run Mosley around for six or seven rounds, he is 37-years-old and did tire vs Cotto, and then jump on him. That was like a 50-50 proposition. But to take on Cotto? At 144lbs? Manny cannot win. Period.

Cotto is undefeated. We all now know Margarito used plaster of paris in his hand wraps. If you watched that fight, I did, it never made any sense until the Mosley fight, when Margarito tried the same thing, and got caught. Cotto got cheated. He did not lose.

Well, there you go. Proof positive that there is a HUGE difference in HEART between Floyd Jr, and PacMan. Floyd Jr would rather eat a warm bowl of kat shit on live pay-per-view than fight Cotto. You literally could not pay him enough money. Cotto is the one guy in the division...that no one really wants to mess with. Pundits say...Mosley is too much for PacMan. So PacMan signs to fight....the dude who beat Mosley. The dude who is...better than Mosley. Mosley said after the Cotto fight, "He beat me fair and square. He's better. If I was younger, maybe. Today, I HIT him, but he just kept coming."

The Flips are Catholic, and have a strange ritual not many peeps know about. They ALL have a little baby (infant) Jesus they normally wear on a chain around their neck. When they REALLY need the Hand of God to intervene, they put baby Jesus in their mouth and suck on him. I have many Flip friends, and not only have seen this done, but have seen it work.

Baby Jesus can save PacMan. And so can Plaster of Paris in his hand wraps. Otherwise...SHIT!

I do not think Mayweather is a joke, but at the same time, Mosley is nothing to sneeze at!!! Who would win? I could not tell you because they are both fierce fighters. Mayweather trains to hard, condition too well, and too intelligent(boxing IQ) to be a laughing stock of the boxing world. I believe weight does matter, but it is not the only factor. I believe preparation, being athletic, and intelligence are some of the attributes of being a good boxer. Roy Jones Jr, he went up and down from his orginal weight class and won. For example, he fought in the heavy weight and boxed against his opponent who was heavier than him and won. I'm 50 pounds heavier than Mosley and Mayweather, and I workout at least 5-6 days a week. I can tell you this either one of them would knock me out within 10 seconds...lol...So, I do not think any of those guys should be consider a joke.
