'Oxygen Tank Bandit' Strikes Again

(Nov. 3) -- An oxygen mask not only helps you breathe, it's a pretty good disguise, at least for one bank robber.

The FBI is looking for a 60- to 70-year-old man who has robbed at least four banks in Southern California, in and around Rancho Sante Fe.

In each heist, surveillance cameras show him carrying what authorities believe is a small oxygen tank with plastic tubing that runs up to the suspect's nose.

On Monday morning, the man struck the Rancho Sante Fe Bank of America. He handed a teller a note demanding money, flashed a pistol and walked out with an undisclosed sum, authorities said.

"He's become a serial bank robber, and they always get caught. He will get complacent. He will make a mistake," FBI agent April Langwell told KSWB-TV, Fox 5 in San Diego.

"If we have photos like we got yesterday, we're going to catch him," she said.

In his latest robbery, the man wore a gray tweed jacket and black hat. He is white and is between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10.

Authorities trace his activities back to Aug. 28, when he strode into a Von's grocery store in Santee wearing an oxygen mask and proceeded to rob the bank inside.

Monday's heist was the first one in which the man displayed a gun, authorities said. But now they know, contrary to his appearance, that this old man isn't your typical senior citizen.
