I have heard that BEV is going to go to the same type of coding that RCA has been using for the last four years and if this does happen then FTA could take a BIG hit and you could possibly see the end of FTA ;( I hope this is all rumoured, however I hear it is true. :censored:

Didn't RCA have to launch a new Bird and do a card swap to make that transition? I don't think BEV wants to kick around that kinda dough. There wouldn't be that big of a market gain to absorb the cost. Although Ted Rogers would love to see that happen.

not to mention the switch to mpeg-4 which will kill alot of FTA shit as well. so why would they do something so crazy now with that coming?

Well......... I also heard that it is going to snow tomorrow (it was on the weather channel). There are serious doubts about B*v going this route any time soon. It's just too expensive for them and they have a cheap reputation.

They're NOT about to switch to mpeg4 for all channels... I hear that a lot, but just do the math. AFAIK DN has like 13M customers. Many of which have more than 1 box. Replacing all their boxes with mpeg4 ones (like a ViP211) @ like 300$ each... That's a few Bln $s right there. Add the overhead of shipping, paying ppl to replace those, re-activating all the new boxes over the phone and all... Even more $. They can't afford that (and the shareholders surely wouldn't let it happen either -- it's always about this quarter's results)

And thinking every customer is gonna happily spend 300$+ to replace every single box they have and not just get cable or DirecTV instead is sadly mistaken. They'd easily lose half their customer base over that.

Nevermind they have tons of birds up there, and lots of BW, so no real need for it.

MPEG4 is only going to be used for the high def channels for the foreseeable future.

if there is any big change the first thing you have to think about is how much is it going to cost b*v?

putting a few lawyers on us is very cheap.

a law suit is cheap.

putting a new satellite up is expensive.

changing cards is expensive.

putting new receivers out is expensive.

if you can't justify that with greater profits then they won't do it. the shareholders would
revolt.

being a public company they have to show how they can squeeze a few more bucks out of the viewers every three months (quarter).

when they put out an ecm some of the newer people in our group, the ones that thought they were just smart and going to get their tv for free, drop out and sign up for b*v. we have exposed them to all the channels, they get hooked and want it to be there every day. so they drop off and join b*v. guess what b*v make a few more bucks.

so for now it is sort of a mexican stand off between fta and b*v. they take a few shots at us and we return a few shots at them. but nothing really happans.

when the coders finish we will be back up again until the next ecm.

BEV has an entire floor of Lawyers that work for them on a daily basis....when that is not enough, they also have a couple of outside law firms that provide them services. Some of the Lawyers that run/ own these external law Firms are on the board of BCE and other BEV companies. If they work hard on minimizing what they pay out to employees for layoffs and pension, then i wouldn't put it past them to go after anyone.

Bev is after the people who are making a business of selling and installing system for others.

yea , i doubt charlie or b3v would go after every single person who uses a FTA receive to receive their programming "illegally", the only way to actually stop this is to go after the manufacturers, and the firmware/coders etc... You take down one end-user another will come right back up ... just how I see it

I think you've nailed it! They just hope they can keep us on the run long enough that, people sign up for a basic package. I imagine anyone right now without a back up is feeling the pressure, from the other members of the household, to get something going. That little boost can make the difference between making this quarters profit goals or not.
