While talking with a friend today who works for them, I was told that 4-6 mths down the road DN will be out of business. Hopefully he was just joking. I'll see what else I can get out of him regarding this.

In the meantime......... Enjoy what we've got !!!!!

Happy New Year everyone !!!

Doesnt make since at this point they are very profitable last I heard so unless they made a very expensive investment that went wrong I dont see that happening any time soon.

I really hope he is joking. But after reading another post on this site it could be true.

There IS a pending merger between Dish & DirecTV, but I don't know who's trying to buy who. I'd also be surprised if the FTC allowed it, as that would eliminate ANY competition in the Sat TV Biz, at least as far as I know. (are there others?)

I've heard several "spots" on Sirius encouraging Dish stockholders to vote for the merger, saying that not voting was a vote against it. Since I don't follow or believe much in the stock market, I don't know more than that.

Sling Media, EchoStar & Ma Bell: The Buyout Game

http://s.wordpress.com/wp-content/themes/vip/gigaom3/plugins/quick-icons/48/045.gif The $380 million purchase (http://gigaom.com/2007/09/24/holy-smokes-echostar-buys-sling-for-380-million/) of Sling Media by EchoStar (DISH) may turn out be act one of a drama that climaxes with AT&T (T) buying EchoStar’s satellite broadcast business. The company has asked its board of directors to split the company into two divisions — both publicly traded.
One division would consist of the consumer pay-TV business, while the second division would house the technology business, including set-top boxes, fixed satellite services, and Sling Media, and ostensibly investments such as EchoStar’s $10 million stake in Archos (http://gigaom.com/2005/05/10/echostar-buys-into-archos/). Charlie Ergen would be chairman and CEO of both of the new companies. Suddenly, Sling Media’s announcement last week that it was helping DirecTV (DTV) distribute football videos online makes sense. Now as a separate company they can do the same for anyone, including DirecTV.
UBS analyst John Hodulik in a note to clients said he believes this split “improves the chances that AT&T will eventually acquire EchoStar’s video business.” EchoStar has been linked in the past with AT&T and is the video provider for AT&T’s Homezone service. The Homezone sales have been on an upswing, even as AT&T pushes sales of its IPTV-based U-Verse service (http://gigaom.com/2007/04/19/att-u-verse-shows-signs-of-life/).
In its most recent quarter (http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=4800&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=24132), AT&T added 200,000 new video connections, bringing the total to 1.9 million. At the end of the second quarter, AT&T had 51,000 U-verse video subscribers, so I am guessing the rest came from satellite TV. This is one of the reasons why Wall Street is convinced that AT&T and EchoStar will come together.

Hodulik points out that next year, when DirecTV’s deal with BellSouth ends, EchoStar is going to get a nice surprise. The acquisition of EchoStar’s pay-TV business would improve its content purchasing power by adding DISH’s 14 million subscribers, enable it to advertise video across its entire footprint, and allow it to more fully participate in the economics associated with sales of the satellite television service into its own residential customer base. He’s right, and given that EchoStar is seeking to find out the tax implications of its split, there is a reasonable chance that the company is preparing itself to be sold.

I do not know anything about it, but the logical thing would be a merger with another company based on the worth of the customers who have a sub. No way they just close shop as several companies pay just to take over the accounts. Obviously if it is not another sat company, then they would have to keep it going.

 I agree with you 100%! DTV & D!SH would never merge, FTC simply would never allow it. And if AT&T end up buying d!sh, then that would be great, we ll have dish programming for a very long time!

I'm only relating the announcement made on Sirius a couple of weeks ago - not making it up, spreading rumors or Bull-sh***ng. I've heard it twice, both times on Sirius 14. I know nothing else about it, but that announcement asking shareholders to vote for the merger means that one is, at the very least, pending with Dish & DirecTV. Unless that announcement was a joke - but I doubt that. True or not, I still do not see the FTC allowing a merger between these 2 to go thru unless another "major" provider launched around the same time. Of course, the FTC IS in Washington DC and the almighty $$$ is what talks there. See: "FCC auctins off HAM radio frequencies for profit....." as an example.

It won't necessarily be the FTC that will decide if a merger can take place if it's even proposed...the Department of Justice also does antitrust reviews of mergers if there is concern about lack of competition in the market place...good example of this is the merger between Maytag and Whirlpool in Mar.06 which they approved even though it put about 70% of the major appliance sales in the U.S. under one companies ownership...this was reviewed and approved by DOJ.

if there's a will, there's a way, and as long as there are codes, there are people willing to sit there, hour after hour, day after day, trying to be the first to break a code, cause it's not only about money with these guys, it's about having respect amongst the other coders too. So, while you do get free tv, enjoy the ride. worrying about if there will be free tv in a few years is like worrying that you might have cancer in a few years. enjoy life while life is good.

DN or B3V will never go bankrupt, or disappear from service. The technology and the services are too valuable. If the government did not step in to take over the services, some multi-billionaire would! As testers we must be vigilant to make sure they never hide the services from us, and basically, that is all they are trying to do to us!

:DTV & D!SH would never merge, FTC simply would never allow it.

The FTC has NOT allowed it the first time it was proposed (3 years ago?)... if there are stories about a merger again, it is merely a proposition brought forth to the FTC. D!SH is simply trying a new angle, and new legal arguments to get it passed this time. But It is destined to fail, since it would create a HUGE Monopoly which in America is a big No-No! no matter how much lobbyists are paid to get politicians to go along, they would have to change the FTC's charter to make it work.

Just my 2 cents.....

Well... First of all I doubt really hard that Charlie is going broke, they are not the top satellite seller but they ain't broke either.

Second, IF the Federal Government would RISK allowing a MONOPOLY to be formed it would be Dave who would buy Charley. His pocket is bigger and there's no way in hell that Charlie would be able to pay for the Number 1 Satellite provider's contracts, equipment, agreements, brand, not yet broken encryption, etc.

Third, Dave's encryption is not unbreakable... there's just no need to do so. IF they were to merge... believe me, those after the big FTA money would have it broken somehow. It is just not convenient right now, too much power on Dave's hand while you can "borrow" what belongs to Charlie.

Fourth, people... please, take it easy... IF it were to happen they would announce it. Remember also that there's a contract with N@gr@...
