i heard that when bev comes out with a new smart card my box could be down for a year !:o i hope this isnt true!;( if anyone can clairify this for me, i would be happy:D

2 years ago, they did a card swap, and some were saying it was the death nell of FTA, we were down for 2 months! With FTA there are NO promises! You want continous - simple, SUBSCRIBE!

There is chit-chat about a new smart card that is being or going to be distributed by the northern provider.

First, from what I understand, as long as all the old cards have not been swapped out then the provider can not take advantage of any new features of the new card.

Second, until they activate new features, no one can really say what will happen since no one is testing the new cards.

If you are down for anytime, then grab a 33 inch dish and a motor and enjoy all the real free to air channels that are sent down from the sky... this way, you still get use from you box (for what it was intended to be used for oh BTW)... a 33 inch dish and motor will cost about 100-200 bucks if you shop around.

That`s so true. Another way of testing besides bev & dn.

hold your dreams a 33 inches is great and the motor to but most people need a reality check on ppv movies or sports not movies channels what you can get for free are mostly international channels and the odd feed i been using a 33 dish and motor for 4 years now yes is fun but no great stuff unless you are spanish speaking

I have a Fortec 1m dish for FTA. It cost more to ship the dumb thing, than I paid for the dish. So sugest people look for a local dealer if they are going to do the FTA thing.

when the 102 card is swapped over to the 206 AND the so series in april fta will be down.and unless someone releases a crack or dump fta and all other testing devices are down.when the providers swapped to the 102 card it was i believe 5 or 6 months before the dump was leaked.i believe it is already dumped,but this time around it will probably not be freeware.there is way to much money to be made in this hobby.things will be different when nagra 3 arrives,so enjoy it while it lasts.

And let's not forget... If Bev does a card swap, DN will still be there. It's unlikely they will do a swap at the same time.

I am not quite in agreement with this statement... but it does depend...

1) will not get PPV, but you do get some good movies in 3 ways...
(a) older movies on G27 (I7)
(b) commercial movies
(c) very recent movies in English but with foreign subtitles

2) there are GREAT sports feeds all over the place... I watch everything there is to watch... in fact - I think its because I like sports so much - that I am hooked into the sports wild feeds of true FTA

Also... I must admit, I do have a BUD (big ugly dish) and get all the other DVB action out there... as well as a small 4TDV sub that pulls in my HBO ! But even with that said, sports feeds and American Idol on G10R are my #1 watching spots !

BTW... I heard/read (this is a rumor section right) that the S06 card was already in use and cracked ?

A large FTA company ie. Viewsat will do what they did last time.... purchase a laser card stripper and get it cracked...... likely be down 4-6 weeks..... The same amount of time it take to get a Ron Popeil juice loosener.....LOL

I have a different opinion, it goes like this.

Since 1988, the computer industry, has increased it's business over a million %.
With this growth, you've got ppl out there who are smart enough to cause major problems. ie- hackers.
WIth this increased knowledge of hacking, I simply cannot see a way for a company like DN to be able to block all access to fta stb's. Not with the ppl who talk in bytes, & megabytes, instead of english, You cannot stop a thief if he isn't being watched, I learned this when I was 7 and our house was broken into. If DN creates a program, or something like an ultimate ecm, I would bet that there's going to be ppl out there who WILL hack it, It may take time, but with the knowledge of technology some of us have, it will happen, it will be cracked. While those of us, I myself included, who are not, Will simply sit back, watch the basic locals with the rabbit ears, or sitting here bored because I lost my remote and can't install the latest bin, or even write long boring posts like this.

One thing that a more open society and share of knowledge leads to (and I include open source models in this) is that you really have to base your business models on something different than trying to charge for content and using technology protecting it...

two cases with different successful business models: Internet companies like Yahoo and Google who offer content for free - why - because ads pay for the service... and second point: Europe satellite which is almost ALL true FTA...

I have determined that US cable and satellite companies who have full control of the content they deliver should work harder to obtain revenue that is currently given to the TV stations and networks for commercials.. there are even other opportunities between movies (on commercial free stations) that could be filled with a limited number of ads (in exchange for the previews)... With this business model, the cable and sat companies stand to profit more than all the sub money they can collect and all the legal crap they have to deal with trying to protect content that has no right being protected...

until then... I watchit the true FTA !

With the distribution of new smart card doesn’t mean the end of FTA with new technology it is hard to stop this business unless the coders go to bed and don’t weak up for a few days.
