Everytime an ecm comes down it COULD be the end of fta as we know it, but alas the coders come through and break it. If man can make it Man can break it. If it can be encrypted it can be decrypted. Its all just a matter of time. mefnikk 02-28-2008, 12:34 PM According to Charlie, the N3 card will be implemented by 2010 at the latest. You can verify this by reading direct news from D!SH. It was also mentioned in one of their quarterly or annual reports. As for decrypting, I am willing to bet that coders are already playing around with N3 since there are Euro providers with this encryption. If N3 is implemented, I doubt it will be long before the fixes are out. Maybe 2 weeks...tops. kndtrpts 02-28-2008, 03:33 PM thanks for the great info. so, implemetation of N3 would be 2 years tops. then we have some time to plan ahead and make preaprations for new alternative options. watchit 02-28-2008, 03:50 PM have a feeling - just a hunch - that FTA vendors will recycle units on everyone in this N2 to N3 ... call it "requirements for N3" whether its true or not... even though... DN and BV will not swap out recvrs on their side... or - who knows... it will all be HDTV by then anyways... prfrmnj 02-28-2008, 04:57 PM My two cents - While DN does have receivers working off Cards, not all of them are. The 311 & 322 (Dual Tuner) is a cardless tuner that receives it's programing through the signal. This being said, the 311 & 322 are pretty much identical in it's electronics component to that of a FTA receiver. The glaring difference in these is the power supply. While most FTA Receiver average 500mha (the fortect puts out 600mha), the memory on those receivers and processor speeds are almost the same with the current FTA STB's. What is the point to this? That maybe, just maybe, the current equipment will be able to handle the new encryption, but hacking that is another subject. Again, this is just an observation without going into detail. Is N3 gonna happen? That is a strong possibility! Will DN have to upgrade their 311 & 322 receivers? I really don't see that happening because they have too many in service right now and would requirea lot of money to do so. BUT, that is a question of "Dollars & Cents". bridgeman 02-28-2008, 05:34 PM do the 311 and 322 receivers not have a card slot? I was told that newer receivers don't have a card, but they have the slot for a card incase they send out a new one. prfrmnj 02-28-2008, 10:59 PM They have card slots, but are not in use. When they went from N1 to N2 everyone said it would be a card swap. Actually, it was even said by DN! But for those receiver the only thing they did was a software upgrade. lewis1018 02-28-2008, 11:02 PM What the card swap will do to FTA? watchit 02-29-2008, 02:56 AM my point is not that FTA boxes can not handle it, but that the suppliers of FTA will want everyone to think they can not do it... and they will not pay or support any software on the old ones either.. so its not a Cant... its a Wont ! c00ly 02-29-2008, 03:12 AM fta companies are not heartless corperations like b3v and dn, they stand by thier hadware and support will happen for n3, its been used in europe and ive read its been cracked ECM 03-02-2008, 12:31 AM fta companies are not heartless corperations like b3v and dn, they stand by thier hadware and support will happen for n3, its been used in europe and ive read its been cracked The prime directive and priority of every corporation is to make money. The ones that seem less heartless just have better PR departments. JOE JOE1E 03-02-2008, 03:06 AM if it is being used in europe and cracked-why would they want to use something that is already bad-unless they do not have something else to use and need to show stock holders they have something new and hope they do not know it is aready bad?????????????? spankysworld 03-02-2008, 10:17 AM I was reading some place that is not the same exact card as in Europe. This would explain why they are going through with the swap. I can bet there is a a deal in place also that B=V tries it first, just to see what happens with it, If all goes well Dik will go with it also. Spanky In Europe they are running Nagra 3 the only thing is Internet and card sharing is the only thing hack as I can see when I visit there on some of there forums. We need a EMU based hack that is not depended on a card or a internet connection. We are still a will before the shit hits the fan here is what has been out there that we do know. Dish / BEV Card swap in the works UPDATE! As most of us have known for awhile, the providers are gearing up for another card swap. Interesting times ahead for this community. This is when experimentation and testing become fun again.... Increases in theft of our signal, or our competitors’ signals, could also limit subscriber growth and cause subscriber churn to increase. We use microchips embedded in credit card-sized access cards, called “smart cards,” or security chips in our receiver systems to control access to authorized programming content. However, our signal encryption has been compromised by theft of service, and even though we continue to respond to compromises of our encryption system with security measures intended to make signal theft of our programming more difficult, theft of our signal is increasing. We cannot assure you that we will be successful in reducing or controlling theft of our service. During 2005, we replaced our smart cards in order to reduce theft of our service. However, the smart card replacement did not fully secure our system, and we have since implemented software patches and other security measures to help protect our service. Nevertheless, these security measures are short-term fixes and we remain susceptible to additional signal theft. Therefore, we have developed a plan to replace our existing smart cards and/or security chips to re-secure our signals for a longer term which will commence later this year and is expected to take approximately nine to twelve months to complete. While our existing smart cards installed in 2005 remain under warranty, we could incur operational costs in excess of $50 million in connection with our smart card replacement program. Quote: BEV will be starting a Card swap April 15th for any subs that still have the 102's in their IRDs IE: 3100, 5900 some 6100's and 9200's. I post the supporting Documents outlining the preliminary details. As for the 4100's they are shipping them with upgraded embedded smart cards. I'm still not sure what they will do with the existing subs that have the 4100's with the 102's embedded on them, I suspect an IRD swap or software upgrade to enable the card slot. As I learn more I will post the details. The document doesn't state that it will be the 102's but we all know what they mean when they say only select receivers. hers is a cut and paste from the documents. Effective date Immediately Description This year Bell ExpressVu will be upgrading select receivers with a new version of the Conditional Access (CA) SmartCard. Store Impacts: ExpressVu would like stores to focus on selling rather than swapping cards. Therefore, all swapping will be done either at the supply chain end of the business or at the client level. Store inventory of receivers with the current card/software will continue to function for several months so stores can continue to sell these. Once these receivers are activated on a client account ExpressVu will send out a new card along with instructions on how to activate their replacement card. Client will be given the option of self activation via the web or by calling the activation centre. Important Stores should begin to exercise ‘first in, first out’ inventory practices so that as they receive new shipments of receivers with the new CA they will put these aside and sell their current inventory first. This will make the swap faster and more efficient for the client and retailer. In order to assist retailers in identifying which units have the new CA, ExpressVu will ship these out with a sticker affixed in proximity to the serial number / UPC label. This sticker will be orange in colour and bear the ‘iTV’ logo as seen below: The table below outlines the receivers models impacted and dates the receivers are being shipped with a new CA SmartCard Receiver Model Being shipping with new CA Smart Card 4100 / 4120 March 5900/5920 February Notes: • The receiver models 6141 and 9242 already come equipped with the new CA smart card. • All other models will be done at client level (i.e. 6120R, 9200, 3100, 5200 and etc.) • 2-TV bundles will only be stickered if both units within the kit contain the new CA. Client Impacts: Beginning April 15, 2008, Bell clients that require this upgrade will receive a letter, a new CA SmartCard and instructions on how to swap the SmrtCard. Client positioning • ExpressVu will be upgrading the software in your receiver(s), which will require you to install and activate a new SmartCard. Installing new SmartCards will ensure that you continue to receive programming and prepare you for future service enhancements to ExpressVu™ digital TV from Bell. Process • All impacted clients will receive a letter in the mail with the new upgraded CA SmartCard and instructions on how to swap their cards. Question and Answer Q1: What happens when current software no longer functions? A1: Any client with the current CA SmartCard will have been swapped well in advance of the termination date of the current software. Stores will be advised several weeks in advance of this software termination date. This will offer the opportunity for stores to inspect their on hand inventory for any units not bearing the sticker so that they can focus on selling these. Attached Files morning 03-02-2008, 05:39 PM A thing to remember is that some FTA receivers also have smart card slots which can be used the same as the provider cards. It would require same chip and emulation. Think our coders are up to it? My answer is yes. The providers probably are only going to be happy a short time. D95SI420 03-02-2008, 09:18 PM Most of the slots are not active in the fta boxes except for a few. They could be used in some way if the primary bin tells box to load from card slot. N3 is being worked on by the coders and alot has been figured out/cracked. Bev is doing the card swap now and DN will probly follow not long after if its a sucess. ECM's and card swaps cost money and cause problems with subscribers as well, They can't afford a card swap every few months:). We will just have to wait and see, but N3 does not look like a huge challenge and we should not be down long on at least some forms of fta. hail coders bridgeman 03-05-2008, 11:15 AM even with the card swap, do you think IKS will still work?? snyper1982 03-06-2008, 08:48 AM According to Charlie, the N3 card will be implemented by 2010 at the latest. Charlie and beverly are the end of the line, they don't have the marketshare to afford being cutting edge so coders in the west have alot of the hard work done for them before the new systems go online such as new cards/encryption overseas. So fear not people, it is not the end of the road.
