Lightbulb MPEG4 Conversion -- This is for Hi-Def Channels only
MPEG4 Conversion -- This is for Hi-Def Channels only
As of december 1, 2008, all channels marked as mpeg2 will be switched to to mpeg4 compression. The mpeg2-only receivers 6000, 811, 921 and 942 will no longer be able to get any hd channels via satellite after dec 1. Dish is contacting users of those older receivers by phone and mail for a free upgrade to a vip211 or dvr vip622. The replacement will be a lease. All hd locals carried by dish are already mpeg4; this conversion finishes out the national line-up.

rundeep 11-27-2008, 01:04 PM my buddy has not been contact about this??
he has 2700-3900-4900.
p.s. all nag(111) cards----he better run out and get one:smoke::zipped:
topherpaquette 11-27-2008, 01:49 PM this is only for HD channels. it will have no affect on SD channels, they will still run on normal mpeg-2. don't panic everyone!
igor1 11-27-2008, 01:52 PM i am running a legal sub on 110/119, a 301 with no problems. i agree probably hd channels only.
HeyRube 11-27-2008, 03:57 PM Please! Of course it's MPEG-2 HD channels, not SD MPEG-2 channels. Charlie still has millions of SD MPEG-2 IRDs in his subscriber base. Charlie's not likely to shut off millions of customers without trying to gouge them with new leases on new boxes. Why? He's not stupid.
It may be official on the 1st of Dec, but there hasn't been MPEG-2 HD channels on Charlie for perhaps a year. When the Voom channels went, so did everything else.
MPEG-2 SD channels will be around for quite a while yet. A card swap cost what? A lot. Think about how much a box swap will cost. A lot more than a lot.
Those 6000, 811, etc don't work for HD MPEG-4. But they still work fine for SD MPEG-2 channels. And should for a long time to come.
rchammer 11-27-2008, 04:31 PM thank-you HeyRube and topherpaquette
