I thought it was interesting that their calender seemed to take the solar cycle into account (11 year). As a ham since I was in the fifth grade I have been very well aware of the solar cycle lol, nothing like the higher HF bands at the peak, talking to Australia from Washington state, Very loud and clear with .100 watt RF on SSB yes that's point one watt lol.:)

It is not a doomsday predicition, but rather a prediction of some sort of HUGE change that affects everyone on earth in some fundamental way. The seem to say that the change will "equalize" everyone in the world.

What could it be? How about solar flares strong enough to burn up everything electronic on the face of the earth coupled with a reversing of the magnetic poles that cripples electricity generation.

We don't all die, but on Dec 12, 2012, no more electronics or even the electricity to run them. That would be a huge equalizer. When we go to bed the night of the 12th, we do so as they did in the middle ages--afraid of the dark.

But it has absolutely nothing to do with 2012, and as HeyRube stated earlier, the Mayan calender does not have any indication that the Mayans thought that 2012 would be an end of the earth but rather a change to another world, but that is not an accurate interpretation either.
The best way to find out the truth about what it signifies is to do some research and read what reputable scientists and archaeologists have to say.:)

Reputable scientists and archaeologists have found that the Mayan calander ends on 12/21/12. Not the 12th. Their findings have been broadcast for quite awhile now on the History channel. However that said, They only talk about how the calander ends. Everything else is speculation as far as what would or could happen. The phrase they use is The world will end as we know it. They don't say it will just end. The one thing that will happen is on 12/21/12, is that our solar system will pass through the equitorial plane of our Galaxy. That much is certian. So the stars will be in a different location to a degree as compared to the past. Also about the magnetic variation and flipping of the poles, Science has shown that in the past, it took place over many years untill it progressed to a certian point. Then it flipped the rest of the way rather fast. Lets hope our gps units are unaffected! :|>

I don't know who said the Mayans could predict solar FLARES.
What has been said, by very reputable researchers, is that it seems that, by hints in the Mayan calender, it is believed that the Mayans had a grasp of the eleven year solar CYCLE, which most ham radio operators are very well aware of.
If you don't know about the VERY predictable nature of the eleven year solar cycle then you can google it!.:)
