Medicine Hat teacher charged with accessing, sharing child porn
The vice-principal of a Medicine Hat, Alta., elementary school has been accused of downloading and sharing images of child pornography after a three-month investigation that began with a tip from U.S. officials.
Greg Fritzke, 43, was arrested on Monday and charged with accessing and distributing child pornography, Calgary police announced.
Fritzke has been a vice-principal at Ross Glen Elementary School since 2004, according to Linda Rossler, superintendent of the Medicine Hat School District in southeastern Alberta.
He was previously a vice-principal at Alexandra Middle School for two years and worked in Brandon, Man., before that, Rossler said.
"I'm very saddened and shocked and dismayed," Rossler told CBC News about her colleague.
"I would like to say to parents that the Medicine Hat School District will ensure that everything possible is done to maintain the safety of their children," she said.
For privacy reasons, Rossler could not reveal Fritzke's current employment status.
Arrest came after tip from U.S. officials
It's alleged that Fritzke downloaded and shared images through a commercial website that allows users to share photos and chat, police said.
Medicine Hat police Insp. Glen Motz told local media it appears no children from the city were the subject of the images.
Fritzke has been released on bail under strict conditions, including prohibitions on computer and internet access and being present in places where children under the age of 18 frequent, such as playgrounds.
In early 2007, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security forwarded a file that was part of an investigation of a photo-sharing chat site to the National Child Exploitation Co-ordination Centre in Ottawa. Calgary police would not confirm whether that site was the same one Fritzke is accused of accessing.
The co-ordination centre then alerted the Southern Alberta Integrated Child Exploitation team, which is made up of officers from the RCMP and various city police forces, the team's Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus explained Monday.
Investigators executed a search warrant on a Medicine Hat home, which led to the arrest, Andrus said.
In August 2008, police arrested and charged a 33-year-old Calgary man with accessing, distributing and possessing child pornography as the result of a similar investigation, Andrus revealed Monday.
He said it's common to see these types of charges.
"Through our experience, that is usually the case that not only do they access and download the child pornography for their own use, but in a number of cases they also distribute and share the images with other people," he said.
The U.S. investigation also identified targets in 14 other countries, police said.
"The exploitation of children is a borderless crime. We've developed working relationships with agencies nationally and internationally to facilitate and support ongoing investigations and the exchange of investigative information. So it's very important that we establish and maintain these working relationships," Andrus said.

This shows that kids aren't safe anywhere, pedophiles are behind close doors and are in schools,churches,stores,etc.. it just sickens me to hear this and also pisses me off, and as Tony will say "LEAVE THE KIDS ALONE"
