MISSION VIEJO, Calif. – Authorities say a 4-year-old girl died after she climbed into a washing machine and her little brother switched it on.

Orange County sheriff's officials say Kayley Ishii apparently climbed into the front-loading washer Monday and her 15-month-old brother managed to start the device.

Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says the machine's controls were 20 inches from the floor and the start switch was a simple push button.

The girl was in the water-filled, tumbling machine for at least two minutes before her mother found her. Her death was ruled accidental.

Investigators say the mother could not explain why Kayley climbed inside the machine.

Says Amormino: "They don't know if they were playing or what."

What a shame to have lost another young life.....parents at fault on this one I would think...how could anyone leave a 15 mo old baby alone for any time let alone the time it took to drown the young 4 year old.....no one hear the washer working???? Where was the mother???? Thanks..

Yes, all good valid points, however the responsibility rest on her to put the infant in a safe place....like a bedroom with a infant gate on the doorway or in a baby crib ...a 15 month old can crawl and walk around and get into all sorts of trouble.....just like this story proves.
I'm sorry that I can't agree with you on this one even though your points were valid....this could have been prevented.....IMHO......thanks...

oh i know it could have been prevented i agree with you 100% on that and the mother should have been looking out for her kid, what i was saying is we shouldnt judge the mother because we dont know the circumstances or what happened that is all

very sad is all i have to say, mistakes can happen and the parents will have to pay the rest of their life's by remembering....

When I heard it on the radio this morning, I thought they said the brother was 15yrs not mths. Was thinkin, "Accidental, how?"

Sad part is, those things have that stupid electronic lock on the door so once there is water in it, they don't open too easy. Now place the mother in duress and the the fact that in high stress/intense moments the first thing to go is manual dextarity. If the mom found her after 1 min, she probably still didn't have a chance.

quote "The girl was in the water-filled, tumbling machine for at least two minutes before her mother found her."

so you are saying that a mother should have her children locked in a pen at all times during the day?
cmon it was 2-3 minutes and unfortunatly accidents happen.
you cant in this world be prepared for every situation that children can get themselves into.
its a sad occurance but far from something the mother should be blamed for.
as a kid my older brother turned on the dryer once with me in it and also locked me in a deep freeze for a bit.

Keith...that is not what I'm saying.....
so you are saying that a mother should have her children locked in a pen at all times during the day?
What I am saying, is for the few minutes or even a few hours, my children were put into a play-pen that was made for parents that needed some time to do something....when you have small children, toddlers that crawl that small should never be out of sight or should be secure....that is why they called them PLAY PENS.....I would never think of letting or leaving my infants wandering around alone even for a MINUTE...the results are pretty self
explanatory in this case....thanks....
