Car sales rise 19% in Germany
Tue, 05 May 2009 15:23:57 GMT
New car sales in Germany jumped 19 percent in April, boosted by a car scrapping scheme, despite a sharp drop in exports.
Around 380,000 new cars were registered in Europe's biggest auto market, up 19 percent from April 2008, figures from the German auto federation, VDA, showed on Tuesday.
It was the third consecutive month of rise in new car sales. However, the figure fell short of March's 40 percent jump -- the biggest rise since 1992.
The government has set up a car scrapping scheme in which motorists are paid 2,500 euros ($3,300) if they trade in their old car for a new, more environmentally friendly model.
A total of 1.2 million vehicles were sold in Germany in the first four months of 2009, up 18 percent from the same period last year.
However, exports plunged by 48 percent in April from a year earlier as the global economic downturn has hit demand for German cars. Production also dropped by 34 percent, VDA said.
