Posted here for lack of better place.....

The weather is changing and our Canadian friends are heading south bringing their Bell or Star Choice receivers. As many of the FTA receivers are not working the subscription receivers are an option.

Here in the Tampa Bay Area you can use either company. Here is some information.

Star Choice..... Star Choice has no problem with you telling them you are in the U.S. using the receiver. The StarChoice customers seem to be getting all the programming as if you are back home. Have recently helped two friends set up Star Choice dishes and the dishes were a bit different but both work just fine. Star Choice will try to give you dish pointing info but they just do not know where to go. Make sure (most important) that the dish mount is level..level..level. With the correct Elevation, Skew and Compass heading you are right on the signal.
Use this site for excellent pointing info. Just select the two Anik satellites and use your zip code:

Code:

http://satcalculator.freehostia.com/

Bell....... As we know you can get Nimiq 1 (91 degrees) with no problems but the 82 degree satellite footprint will not allow you to get the satellite in Florida. A friend brought his receiver and the dish was set up with no issues. When the receiver was plugged in the channels showed up but some of the channels were "RED" indicating he needed to subscribe to those channels. But they were in his package. He called Bell (Not saying he was in Florida) and had Bell re-set his receivers. He could then again get the channels. The problem is that some programming packages give you channels from the 82 degree satellite so you will not get those in Florida. Not a good idea to tell Bell you are in the U.S. as in past years thy have shut down service until you return to Canada.

D*recTV, the nation's leading digital television service, received the highest score for customer satisfaction among sat and cable tv companies rated by the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). D*recTV posted a significantly higher index score than any other cable or satellite company included in the ACSI survey. D*recTV got a score of 71. D*recTV also had one of the highest scores in the overall communications sector, which includes phone and wireless providers.
Customers surveyed by the ACSI in the first quarter of 2006 were asked about perceived quality, perceived value and their expectations prior to subscribing to the service. The ACSI also measures customer loyalty and retention.
The ACSI is produced by the Stephen M. Ross Business School at the University of Michigan, in partnership with the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and the international consulting firm, CFI Group.
The president of D*recTV Sales and Service, John Suranyi said, "D*recTV’s top score for overall customer satisfaction in this year's ACSI survey demonstrates a continuing commitment by all D*recTV employees to provide our 15.4 million customers with the best television entertainment experience, backed by strong service." He also added, "While we scored considerably higher than our competitors and pulled up the industry average from last year, we will continue improving our service until we reach 100 percent customer satisfaction."

El Segundo-based D*recTV Group said on the 8th of this month that it will lead a team of companies in starting a new professional sports league for video gaming. Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox is a partner in this venture. Other partners include Mountain Dew, Fox Interactive Media and Best Buy.

The Championship Gaming Series, or CGS, will begin next year with gaming tournaments broadcast on the D*recTV satellite service and online with IGN Entertainment, another of the partners in the venture.
The league will be unusual from the general video-gaming tournaments because it will offer a series of ongoing competitions than just gaming events, D*recTV said. Jade Ekstedt, spokeswoman said that this would be D*recTV's first major step into video gaming. She also added that the video games to be used in the tournament were not decided on as yet.
Jim Schaeffler, senior analyst for media and telecommunications at The Carmel Group, described D*recTV's new initiative as ‘brilliant’. "I have teenagers who are very interested in card gaming, and thus become very interested in telecasts of card gaming," Schaeffler said. "By analogy, measuring their level of interest in video gaming, a telecast of video gaming would be more interesting to them than even the World Series of Poker."
"But nothing quite like this on an entertainment level," Schaeffler said of CGS. "The bottom line is it's the kind of thing that will gain and keep subscribers. And when all is said and done, that is the name of their game."
The televised CGS tournaments will use "new technology that takes viewers inside the actual game competitions," according to D*recTV.
Teams nationwide will participate in the tournaments, all vying for the "Dew Cup," sponsored by Mountain Dew. Details of the Dew Cup and the "unprecedented prize money" will be unveiled later this year.
David Hill, D*recTV's president of entertainment, will lead the consortium developing CGS. The consortium will help develop the first three DirecTV gaming tournaments to be broadcast in July. D*recTV portrayed these three tournaments as a "warm-up" for CGS tournaments starting next year.
DirecTV has more than 15 million subscribers, making it the nation's leading digital-television service provider. D*recTV shares rose 48 cents Monday to close at .06 on the New York Stock Exchange.

D*recTV launched its first toddler channel on the 11th of this month and called it the BabyFirstTV, an all-infant programming all the time all, the...

D*recTV launched its first toddler channel on the 11th of this month and called it the BabyFirstTV, an all-infant programming all the time all, the day. This programming is for children who are 2 yrs old and under. Programs will be from Brainy Baby and First Impressions DVDs, as well as a story time. No other information is available and the network’s website didn’t give much information either.
The creators of BabyFirstTV are getting a lot of abusive criticism from parenting experts who say that their programming gives parents an excuse not to interact with their children. The people at BabyFirstTV say that their programming, for babies who are six months to three years old, is meant to encourage interaction between kid and adult.
The creators of this program say it is educational and interactive, and that it will be available 24/7 on D*recTV.
But Mount Sinai pediatrician Dr. Danielle Laraque argues that watching TV is just too passive. “We know that children learn best through personal interaction,” she says, “both their cognitive and social and emotional health.”
"This is the first channel dedicated to babies and their parents— transforming TV from its original purpose into a way for them to interact," said Sharon Rechter, BabyFirstTV's executive vice president for business development and marketing. "The fact of life is that babies are already watching TV," she said. "That's why having BabyFirstTV is so important — what we want to offer is completely safe, commercial-free and appropriate content."
The debate is still raging and will D*recTV’s new launch be a thumb’s up or will it go down the drain?
BabyFirstTV's advisory board includes Dr. Edward McCabe, a pediatrician who is physician-in-chief at UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital. "I was skeptical when I first heard about it," McCabe said. "But I became convinced that this is a major evolution in media for kids."
Rechter said BabyFirstTV will start with 250 hours of content. By the end of 2006, Rechter said, BabyFirstTV will also be available in Spanish.
The three companies behind BabyFirstTV are Regency Enterprises, a film and TV production company that is a partner of Fox Entertainment; Kardan N.V, an investment group based in the Netherlands and Israel; and Bellco Capital, a private Los Angeles-based investment fund.
D*recTV offers this program at a mere a month. It will initially be available by satellite through D*recTV and later through cable TV providers as well.

D*recTV, the biggest U.S. satellite tv provider, is at risk of losing its major source of new subscribers after AT&T draws to a close with the billion acquisition of BellSouth Corp. D*recTV has 15.4 million customers, judging against the 12 million for Douglas County-based Ech*Star, provider of the Dish Network satellite TV service.
The company may drop D*recTV as a reseller because it already has a partnership with No. 2 satellite provider Ech*Star Communications, said Aryeh Bourkoff, analyst for UBS AG.
The contribution of D*recTV customers from BellSouth doubled to as much as 42% of the first-quarter total, implying on the fact that D*recTV was increasingly depending on this partnership. Of the 255,000 new D*recTV users, as many as 105,000 were added by BellSouth, according to results released by both companies in the past two weeks. The additions suggest El Segundo, Calif.-based D*recTV is too reliant on BellSouth, Bourkoff said. AT&T plans to complete the acquisition of BellSouth this year.
"Telephone companies are delivering satellite subscriber growth, but the organic market is not," Bourkoff said. "It's clear that satellite operational growth is coming at a diminished rate." An Ech*Star spokeswoman said the company had no comment on what would become of its partnership with AT&T after the BellSouth acquisition is finalized.
AT&T spokeswoman Anne Vincent said the company will delay decisions about partners until the acquisition of Atlanta- based BellSouth is completed.

Fox, D*rect TV launch partnership for Programming On Demand
Fox Entertainment Group and D*rect TV, Inc., today announced an agreement to bring viewers the best of FX and FOX Broadcasting on demand through the new D*rect TV Plus digital video recorder (DVR). In an industry first, beginning in March viewers will get a first look at prime time hits from FX a full 24-48 hours prior to their initial broadcasts for USD.2.99 and, later in the year, D*rect TV subscribers will have post-air access to FOX Broadcasting's hottest series for just 99 cents for six to seven days following their national broadcast.
The innovative deal will provide D*rect TV subscribers the ability to choose between pre-air and post-air television programming options for the first time ever. In addition, D*rect TV viewers will have free, on demand access to a weekly showcase of exclusive highlights from Fox Entertainment, including the promotional presentation of limited, full-length television episodes, extended footage from leading Fox programs, and behind the scenes features on Fox films and TV shows.
"We're committed to finding new ways to bring our content to consumers and we think this deal is a huge step forward in giving them greater choice and control over their entertainment experience, For the very first time, viewers will be able to watch their favorite shows before the rest of the world. And we now have the ability to create different cuts of our programs for the pre-air audience – versions with additional scenes and materials not included in the network broadcast – something entirely new. It's an exciting opportunity for the television consumer and for us. Moreover, this new partnership will also enrich the viewing experience by providing access to Direct TV's enhanced services, features and interactive functionality." said Peter Chernin, President and Chief Operating Officer of News Corporation.
"Growing our interactive/On Demand service is a top priority for D*rect TV and our partnership with Fox is further testament to the commitment D*rect TV is making to delivering the very best in television and entertainment programming, By continually offering our subscribers new and exclusive programming choices at their convenience, we not only enhance the viewing experience but broaden the depth of our services and offerings." said Chase Carey, president and CEO, Direct TV, Inc.
Under terms of the agreement, viewers will have on demand access to some of television's most acclaimed dramas, comedies and documentaries including FX's The Shield, Rescue Me, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and 30 Days and FOX Broadcasting's 24, and Prison Break. Television viewing habits continue to evolve and this deal is a prime example of our ongoing effort to bring consumers exciting new ways to individualize their entertainment experience, said Peter Levinsohn, President of Fox Digital Media. And in D*RCECTV, we've found an ideal partner.
